Newcastle bekeek Douglas
FC TWENTE centre-back Douglas Franco Teixeira has emerged as a possible defensive target for Newcastle United. The 23-year-old is also attracting interest from Aston Villa and ambitious Queens Park Rangers and is thought to be keen on a move to the Premier League.
Sources in Holland today indicated to the Chronicle that Newcastle United are amongst a clutch of interested parties interested in the 23-year-old defender.
NUFC are in the market for a central defender after losing the services of Steven Taylor for the rest of the season, with work already going on behind the scenes at Newcastle in preparation for the January transfer window.
The Brazilian-born defender – known as Douglas in the Dutch League – started his career his native country with Joinville.
He moved to FC Twente in 2007 and is a former team-mate of NUFC star Cheick Tiote.
The player was born in Florianopolis but while harbouring dreams of playing for Brazil, Douglas has successfully gained Dutch citizenship and is now pushing for a call-up to the Holland squad.
At 6ft 4in, Douglas cuts an uncompromising figure and is a popular player with fans thanks to his no-nonsense attitude – something that would sit well with the Toon Army.
However, the player has also overstepped the mark on occasion and was banned for six games by the Dutch FA earlier this year after a red card for punching Alkmaar player Pontus Wernbloom and then pushing referee Ruud Bossen.
Douglas’ contract runs out next summer and the player could be available at a reduced fee rather than Twente losing him for nothing next summer.
The player has attracted interest from outside the Premier League with PSV Eindhoven and Ajax looking into his availability, but Douglas claimed he would not play for anybody else in Holland other than the team he won the Eredivisie with in 2010 under Steve McClaren – who would undoubtedly give an excellent reference for a player who has made 108 league appearances for Twente.
NUFC are believed to have sent a scout to check out his performance in Twente’s recent 1-0 victory Europa League over Fulham, when Villa were also represented.
Serie A outfit Juventus and Bundesliga duo Hamburg and Wolfsburg have also looked into signing Douglas in the past.
Alan Pardew – who was on foreign shores on a scouting mission yesterday – has already confirmed that Mike Ashley gave him the green light to bring in a defender.
Last Thursday he said: “Mike has already asked me, ‘when are we going to get a centre-half?’”
